Motor Vehicle Collision FAQs
What to do after a car accident:
Seek emergency care if needed
Call 911 for severe pain, difficulty breathing, bleeding, loss of consciousness, fractures, or neurological symptoms.Report the accident
Exchange insurance and contact information and document the scene with photos and witness information if possible.Get evaluated
Even minor accidents can cause injuries such as whiplash, muscle strains, joint sprains, headaches, and nerve irritation that may not appear immediately.Use your insurance benefits early (PIP)
Delaying care can worsen injuries and complicate insurance claims.
What Is PIP?
Personal Injury Protection (PIP) is “no-fault” auto insurance coverage that helps pay for medical care after an accident, regardless of who caused the collision.
This coverage is through your own auto insurance. If the accident was not your fault, opening a PIP claim generally should not affect your rates.
In Washington State, standard PIP coverage often includes:
• $10,000 in medical benefits
• Coverage for accident-related treatment for up to 3 yearsOne important thing to know is that not all insurance plans include PIP coverage, so it’s always a good idea to check your policy. If you do not have PIP coverage, you will typically need to have an attorney involved to help manage your claim and payment for care. We are always happy to help guide you through that process and can refer you to trusted law offices we work with regularly.
Unfortunately, if you do not have PIP, we cannot directly bill the at-fault party’s insurance. While insurance companies may sometimes say that is an option, in reality they often control when they feel treatment should stop instead of allowing your provider to determine what care is medically necessary.
Another helpful thing to know is that PIP coverage generally follows you and your family members. So if your spouse or child was injured while riding in another vehicle, your own PIP coverage should still be opened.
How To Use Your Insurance After an Accident
Notify your auto insurance company as soon as possible and open a claim.
Be prepared to provide:
Date of accident
Claim number
Insurance information
Information about where you are receiving treatment
Providing this information to your healthcare provider helps ensure your treatment is billed correctly and your available benefits are used appropriately.
Common symptoms in adults after an MVC:
Our bodies are not designed to withstand the sudden forces involved in a motor vehicle accident. Even a seemingly minor fender bender can create rapid movements and stress throughout the spine and surrounding tissues that are far outside of what the body naturally experiences. These forces can cause muscles, ligaments, and joints to stretch or move beyond their normal range, often leading to muscle strains, ligament sprains, joint irritation, and spinal instability.
After an accident, the body responds with inflammation as part of the healing process. While inflammation is a normal and necessary response, it can also lead to stiffness, tension, reduced mobility, and pain. As the body heals, scar tissue may form in injured muscles and connective tissues. If injuries are not properly addressed, this healing can occur unevenly, potentially leading to long-term issues such as chronic pain, decreased flexibility, restricted range of motion, headaches, and recurring flare-ups.
Many people are surprised that symptoms do not always appear immediately after an accident. It is very common for pain and discomfort to develop gradually over the hours or days that follow.
Some of the most common symptoms and injuries associated with motor vehicle accidents include:
Neck pain and whiplash injuries
Mid and lower back pain
Muscle stiffness and tension
Headaches and migraines
Shoulder pain and tightness
Joint pain or restricted movement
Muscle spasms
Numbness or tingling into the arms or legs
Dizziness or balance issues
Fatigue and difficulty sleeping
Jaw pain or TMJ irritation
Disc injuries or nerve irritation
Even when symptoms seem mild at first, it is important to have your injuries properly evaluated. Early assessment and treatment can help support proper healing, reduce inflammation, restore mobility, and decrease the likelihood of chronic pain or long-term complications.
Why symptoms can show up days later:
Getting into a car accident can feel overwhelming, even when it seems “minor” at first. In the moments after a collision, your body naturally shifts into fight or flight mode to protect you. During this response, adrenaline and stress hormones surge through the body, often masking pain, tension, and injury for hours or even days afterward.
As that adrenaline begins to wear off, many people start noticing symptoms such as headaches, neck pain, back pain, fatigue, dizziness, muscle tightness, pelvic pain, or increased irritability. It is also very common to simply feel “off” after an accident, even if you cannot immediately explain why.
At Cloud Chiropractic, we encourage patients to slow down and truly listen to their bodies after a collision. Many people try to push through symptoms and get back to normal quickly, especially parents, busy professionals, and active families. While that instinct is understandable, untreated injuries and nervous system stress can often become longer-term issues if they are not properly evaluated and supported early on.
Our doctors are specially trained to assess and treat the musculoskeletal and nervous system injuries commonly associated with motor vehicle accidents. We take a whole-body approach to recovery, looking not only at where pain is showing up, but also how the accident impacted movement patterns, joint stability, muscle tension, posture, and the nervous system as a whole.
At Cloud Chiropractic, we have a special focus in caring for:
• Pregnant and postpartum patients
• Infants and children after collisions
• Families involved in motor vehicle accidents
• Whiplash and cervical injuries
• Headaches and concussion-related symptoms
• Pelvic instability and sciatic pain
• Nervous system dysregulation and stress-related tension
• Soft tissue and fascial injuries
Our team understands that healing after an accident is not always linear. Recovery often requires a combination of chiropractic care, soft tissue work, movement support, home care recommendations, and ongoing reassessment as your body heals.
Whether you were recently in an accident yourself, are pregnant, or are concerned about changes you are noticing in your child after a collision, our goal is to provide thoughtful, individualized care to help support your recovery safely and compassionately.
How chiropractic care can help:
Chiropractic care can be a valuable part of recovery after a motor vehicle accident. Emergency rooms, urgent care providers, and primary care practitioners are essential when serious injuries such as fractures, lacerations, or other acute medical conditions are present, and those situations should always receive appropriate medical attention.
However, many accident-related injuries involve muscles, joints, and soft tissues that can cause significant pain without obvious findings on imaging. In these cases, chiropractic care can help support the body's natural healing process, restore function and mobility, and reduce the risk of long-term or chronic pain.
At Cloud Chiropractic, we are trained to assess and care for patients of all ages. We take the time to understand the root cause of your symptoms and develop an individualized treatment plan focused on your recovery. We also serve as advocates for our patients, helping coordinate appropriate care and referrals when another provider or specialist is needed to ensure you receive the best possible outcome.
Massage therapy after auto accidents:
At Cloud Chiropractic, we also offer massage therapy as part of a comprehensive approach to motor vehicle accident recovery. Following an accident, muscles often become tight, inflamed, and protective in response to injury, which can contribute to pain, stiffness, and restricted movement. Massage therapy helps reduce muscle tension, improve circulation, decrease discomfort, and support the body's natural healing process. When combined with chiropractic care, massage therapy can help prepare the muscles and soft tissues for treatment, improve mobility, and enhance overall recovery. By addressing both joint function and soft tissue health, we are able to provide more complete care and help patients return to their daily activities as comfortably and efficiently as possible.
Care for pregnant patients:
Pregnant and newly postpartum moms often require a longer treatment plan after a car accident, even in cases that may initially seem “minor.” During pregnancy, the body goes through significant hormonal and biomechanical changes that can affect healing, joint stability, and overall recovery.
One of the main hormones involved is relaxin, which increases during pregnancy to help prepare the pelvis and body for birth. While this is important for delivery, it also creates increased ligament laxity and decreased joint stability throughout the body. This can make pregnant patients more vulnerable to sprains, strains, pelvic instability, and prolonged inflammation after a collision.
At the same time, a pregnant body is constantly changing biomechanically. As the baby grows, posture shifts, the center of gravity changes, core stability decreases, and additional stress is placed on the low back, pelvis, ribs, hips, neck, and pelvic floor. Even low-speed accidents can create forces that an already stressed body may have a harder time compensating for.
Newly postpartum moms may continue to experience instability and delayed healing for months after delivery, especially while caring for a newborn, breastfeeding, lifting car seats, and recovering from labor or cesarean birth. Relaxin can remain elevated postpartum, and many moms are still rebuilding core and pelvic stability during this time.
After being evaluated by your OB or medical provider to rule out any serious injuries or pregnancy-related complications, pregnant patients may experience symptoms such as:
• Neck pain and headaches
• Mid-back or rib pain
• Pelvic pain or instability
• Round ligament discomfort
• Sciatic pain
• Hip pain
• Increased muscle tension
• Difficulty sleeping comfortably
• Low back pain
• Increased Braxton Hicks contractions due to stress on the body
• Increased swelling or inflammation
• Dizziness or balance changes
• Increased anxiety or nervous system dysregulation after the accident
Because pregnancy and postpartum recovery are dynamic and constantly changing, treatment plans are often adjusted over time to support both mom and baby safely throughout the healing process.
Care for children after accidents:
“Should My Child Be Checked After a Car Accident?”
Often types of symptoms in children can present atypically.
Kids do not always complain of pain right after a car accident. Sometimes their symptoms show up later or look very different than what adults experience. Common things parents may notice after an accident include:
• Changes in mood or behavior
• Increased clinginess or separation anxiety
• Trouble sleeping or nightmares
• More emotional meltdowns or irritability
• Fatigue or low energy
• Headaches
• Stomach aches or nausea
• Increased sensitivity to sound, light, or motion
• Difficulty concentrating at school
• Changes in posture or movement
• New bedwetting in younger children
• Dizziness or balance changes
• Avoiding the car or fear around driving
• Decreased interest in sports or play
• Torticollis or head tilting in infants and young children
• Increased tension while nursing or feeding in babies
• Fussiness or difficulty being soothed in infants
Children are often very resilient and may not immediately say they are hurt, especially if adrenaline is high after the accident. If your child seems “off” physically, emotionally, or
